It only takes a minute to sign up. I'm using GroundWork a monitoring framework built upon Nagios to monitor some network devices via SNMP, but I'm stuck on a problem with bandwidth usage. Most routers, including the Cisco used here, can be queried via SNMP for network traffic information; however, they return this information in the form of a counter, meaning "how many bytes have gone in or out of a given interface since the router was turned on".
So, in order to get something meaningful out of this information, you need to, f. But how can I generate an alert when bandwidth usage exceeds a certain limit?
Nagios can send alerts only when a value is above a given threshold, not based on the difference between two distinct measures of the same value. I need a way to check if bandwidth usage is above a certain threshold, and generate a Nagios alert thus sending an e-mail if this happens; I can't rely only on the admin looking at performance data to see if something is wrong with network bandwidth. I did this with a cron script, stores current value in a temp file then next time uses it to calculate bandwidth utilization since last run.

All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared default configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.
Refer to Cisco Technical Tips Conventions for more information on document conventions. ASR series router platform is a centralized router platform which means all the packets received by the router have to reach a centralized forwarding engine before it can be sent out.
The ESP module in the chassis determines the forwarding capacity of the router. Miscalculation of the Router capacity for the hardware configuration in use ESP and SIP combination can lead to network designs where the ASR series router fails to forward packets at line rate.
Three scenarios which can cause packet loss on an ASR series router are explained in this section. The SIP card supports the ingress packet classification and buffering in order to allow for oversubscription. Identify the ingress and egress interfaces for the traffic flow. If the router have a high bandwidth ingress link which receives packets at line rate and a low bandwidth egress link, it causes buffering at the ingress SIP.
Sustained incoming line rate traffic in these scenarios over a period of time causes the buffers to run out eventually and the router starts to drop packets. Note : SIP supports ingress packet classification which allows high priority packets to be still forwarded as long as it is not over subscribed and the non-critical packets gets dropped. The ingress classification and scheduling of packets on ASR routers is explained in the link. Classifying and Scheduling packets on ASR Run the show interface output on the egress interface to check if flow control is on and if the interface receives pause inputs from the next hop device.
Pause inputs indicates that the next hop device is congested. This ultimately leads to packet drops if the traffic rate is high and sustained over a period of time. Run the show interface summary command to check the total traffic that traverses the router. If the ESP is overloaded then it back-pressures the ingress SIP card to slow down and start to buffer which ultimately leads to packet loss if the high rate is stained over a longer period.
If the troubleshoot commands reveal that the router is not impacted by the scenarios explained, proceed to the ASR packet drop troubleshoot. The outputs are captured from an ASR router loaded with In this example, the total forwarding capacity maximum output capacity of the router is 5G and is determined by the ESP capacity.
The ingress over subscription drops indicate buffering in the ingress SIP and points that the forwarding engine or egress path congestion. The first function is run the different processes under IOS to carry out the function for a switch operating in a network. The CPU is doing both of these functions simultaneously.

Under normal operating conditions, on a non-stackable switch at a minimum, the CPU will have a certain baseline utilization. The number of members in the stack makes a difference on overall CPU utilization.
In the stacked switch, the CPU utilization is measured on the master switch only. There are multiple background IOS processes running on timers that execute multiple times a second. One of the reasons that different ranges and models within those ranges will differ in the baseline utilization is differences in design.
Where the earlier models of the switches with little usage of microcontrollers, the later ones do utilize these more. As more tasks are being offloaded to those microcontrollers there is an increase in communication between the CPU and the microcontrollers.
How To Calculate Bandwidth Utilization Using SNMP
The output shows how busy the CPU has been in the past 5 seconds, the past 1 minute, and the past 5 minutes. The output also shows the utilization percentage that each system process has used in these periods. Two other important numbers are shown on the same output line: the average utilization for the last 1 minute 6 percent in this example and the average utilization for past 5 minutes 5 percent in this example. These values are typical for a nonstacked switch in a small and stable environment.
There can be hundreds of active system processes on the CPU at any time. This number can vary, based on the switch model, the Cisco IOS release, the feature set, and if applicable the number of switches in a switch stack.
For example, on a stack of Catalyst switches running the IP base image, there are typically active system processes. The Catalyst switch running the LAN base image has a smaller number of active processes than a stack of Catalyst switches. Nevertheless, debugging should be carried out with extreme caution because it may raise the CPU utilization even more. These prerequisites should be met in order to make debugging safe and useful:. All logging destinations except buffer logging should be either disabled or their logging severity level should be lowered from 7 debugging to 6 informational or less, using the appropriate logging destination [ severity-level ] configuration command.
To see which logging destinations and corresponding levels are enabled, read the header lines of the show logging exec command. Logging buffer size should be increased in order to capture sufficient information. For more details, refer to the description of the logging buffered global configuration command.
